AMERICAN CAPITAL DECLARES DIVIDEND OF $0.52 PER SHARE,
18% INCREASE OVER FOURTH QUARTER OF 1999

Bethesda, MD -- American Capital Strategies, Ltd. (Nasdaq:ACAS) today announced its Board of Directors has declared a fourth quarter 2000 dividend of $0.52 per share, payable on December 28, 2000 to record holders as of December 12, 2000. This dividend is an 18% increase over the fourth quarter 1999 regular dividend of $0.44 per share.

The current dividend of $0.52 per share is estimated to be a distribution of ordinary income.
